Campus reopens after Pitt police report ‘critical incident’ at Central Catholic

This story will be updated.

Pitt police have determined that the University is safe to reopen. Police locked down campus for about half an hour after releasing an ENS alert Wednesday morning warning the community of a “critical incident” at Central Catholic High School and telling people to avoid the area.

They said campus would remain locked down until the incident is resolved, the alert said.

Pittsburgh Public Safety said students and parents from Central and Oakland Catholic schools should gather at the Oakland Quad Cathedral of Learning. They said police are investigating reports of an active shooter, but “there’s no evidence of that at this time.” They also said there are no reports of injuries at this time.

Brian Cook, the director of communications for Central Catholic, told WPXI News that they believe it’s a hoax, but are taking necessary action to make sure.

According to KDKA, state police are investigating reports of active shooter threats in schools throughout the state that are believed to be “computer generated swatting calls.”

Students reported sheltering in place in Thackeray Hall, a University building close to the school. Representatives from Pitt police, the University and City police were unable or unavailable to provide information immediately.
