Chase Young leaves Panthers without a deal, on schedule to visit Saints
Chase Young’s free agency sweepstakes are not going to end quickly. The former San Francisco 49ers and Washington Commanders defensive end met with the Carolina Panthers on Wednesday, per CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson, who adds that Carolina will host another veteran pass rusher on Thursday: Jadeveon Clowney.
So Young is still on track for his next two free agent visits, starting with the Saints. NewOrleans.Football’s Nick Underhill reports that Young will visit the Saints in New Orleans. He’s also scheduled to travel to Nashville for a meeting with the Tennessee Titans afterwards. Other teams may be lurking, too, but that’s all that has been reported thus far.
We’re moving into the second wave of free agency. The biggest (and/or simplest) deals were all negotiated during the legal tampering window to make up the first wave of signings. This next flare-up of activity is going to face more scrutiny. Contracts will be a little smaller and the players available are seen as less desirable for any combination of factors. In Young’s case, injury history and inconsistent effort, which these meetings are aimed at addressing.

Still, the Saints could use Young’s help. Including the postseason he matched Carl Granderson’s team-leading 8.5 sacks last season while pressuring quarterbacks at a significantly higher rate than anyone in New Orleans. There are questions about him but at the same time there’s no doubting his talents. He’s a sought-after player for good reason.
Does this mean the Saints are frontrunners for Young, or that the Panthers are out on him? Probably not. Carolina has more unspent salary cap space (Over The Cap’s experts estimate more than $19 million) than the Saints ($15 million) after signing a slew of players. The Titans have been very busy and they’re still leading the league in unspent cap space ($72 million). This is a situation where the Saints can get outspent, but at the same time they should probably stick to their number rather than enter a bidding war.
